Umbwe — 6 Days
Kilimanjaro's most direct and demanding path — a steep forested ridge straight to the Barranco Valley. Best suited to fit, experienced trekkers comfortable with fast altitude gain.
Day-by-day itinerary
Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Cave Camp
A steep, direct climb straight up a forested ridge — fewer switchbacks, faster elevation gain than any other route.
Umbwe Cave Camp → Barranco Camp
Continue up out of the forest onto exposed ridgeline, arriving at Barranco Camp beneath the Western Breach.
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall, then traverse ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.
Acclimatization Day at Karanga
A rest day is strongly recommended here given Umbwe's fast ascent profile, to reduce altitude-sickness risk.
Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Push on to Barafu base camp, rest, then summit overnight, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise before descending.
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
A final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate for your summit certificate.
