Northern Circuit — 9 Days
Kilimanjaro's newest and longest itinerary, circling the quiet northern slopes before joining the summit push — the most gradual ascent profile and the highest reported success rate on the mountain.
Day-by-day itinerary
Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa Camp
A short drive to the trailhead, then an easy first walk through pristine rainforest.
Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp
Climb out of the forest onto the wide, open Shira Plateau.
Shira 1 → Moorland Camp
Head north and east around the mountain's quieter side, away from the busier southern circuit crowds.
Moorland Camp → Buffalo Camp
Continue the northern traverse beneath Kibo's northern glaciers, with wide-open views and few other trekkers.
Buffalo Camp → Third Cave Camp
A gentler acclimatization-friendly day continuing the circuit toward the eastern side of the mountain.
Third Cave Camp → School Hut
Join the upper reaches of the standard summit approach, with your body now well acclimatized from the long circuit.
School Hut → Barafu Camp
A short move to Barafu base camp, resting and preparing gear for the overnight summit push.
Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Depart after midnight for the summit, reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise thanks to your extended acclimatization, then descend to Mweka Camp.
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate
A final descent through the forest to Mweka Gate for your summit certificate.
